Persistent Pain / Chronic Pain Support

At East Devon Physical Therapy, we understand that persistent pain can affect far more than one part of the body.

It can impact confidence, sleep, activity levels, work, exercise, mood and day-to-day life. For many people, it is frustrating, exhausting and difficult to explain, especially when symptoms have been going on for a long time or when previous treatment has not helped in the way they hoped.

Our role is not to dismiss symptoms or offer false promises. It is to listen carefully, assess properly and help you make sense of what is happening so that you can start moving forward with the right support.

Persistent pain is sometimes called chronic pain, but whatever language feels right to you, the experience is real and it deserves to be taken seriously.

We support people living with longer-term pain, recurring pain and complex pain presentations that may involve flare-ups, reduced tolerance to activity, loss of confidence, deconditioning or a cycle of doing too much and then paying for it afterwards.
Some people come to us with a clear diagnosis. Others have ongoing pain without a straightforward explanation.

In both cases, our approach is thoughtful, practical and tailored to the individual.

We may be able to help if you are experiencing:

Persistent pain is rarely helped by a one-size-fits-all plan. That is why careful assessment and the right explanation matter.

At East Devon Physical Therapy, we take a calm, evidence-informed and person-centred approach.

We look at the full picture, including your symptoms, physical function, activity levels, previous injuries, lifestyle demands, flare-up patterns, goals and concerns. We then build a rehabilitation plan that is realistic, supportive and focused on helping you regain confidence and capacity over time.

Your treatment plan may include:

Our aim is not to chase quick fixes. It is to help you make steady, meaningful progress.

When pain has been present for a long time, people are often given mixed messages. Some are told to push through. Others are told to stop doing things altogether. Neither is always helpful.

We aim to provide a more balanced approach.

That means understanding what is sensitive, what is changeable, what needs support and how to build progress without repeatedly tipping symptoms over. For many people, this involves restoring trust in movement, improving physical capacity and reducing the fear that pain always means damage.

We are careful with our language, honest about uncertainty where needed and focused on practical steps that can genuinely help.

We combine clinical experience, rehabilitation expertise and a supportive, no-nonsense approach.

We understand that people with persistent pain often feel unheard, stuck or wary of overpromising. Our team focuses on listening properly, explaining clearly and building a plan that feels manageable and individual.

Where appropriate, we may draw on exercise rehabilitation, movement retraining, strength work, symptom management strategies and wider support around confidence and function.

People often come to us because they want to:

Your first appointment gives us time to listen to your story, understand how pain is affecting you and assess the factors that may be keeping things going.

We will talk through what we think is contributing, what may help and what a realistic plan could look like.

You will leave with a clearer understanding and a structured way forward.
