Velocity-Based Training in Axminster
If you’re looking for a smarter, more objective way to build strength, return to sport, or progress your rehab without guessing, Velocity-Based Training is one of the tools we use to guide training intensity and track progress.
At East Devon Physical Therapy (Axminster, EX13 5PQ), velocity-based training isn’t a “gym gimmick” — it’s used as part of a clear plan: assessment first, then the right combination of strength work, rehab and progression so you get meaningful change, not just a hard session.
What is Velocity-Based Training?
Velocity-based training is a method of strength and performance training that uses movement speed (velocity) to guide how you train.
Instead of relying only on how heavy something feels, or what you lifted last week, we measure how fast you’re moving the weight. That gives us real-time feedback on:
- how hard you’re working today
- whether you’re fatiguing during the session
- whether the exercise is hitting the goal (strength, power, control, rehab capacity)
- We use a velocity tracking system (such as Output Sports) to measure this during key exercises.
Why we use it (Plain English)
Most people train using a mix of guesswork and willpower. That’s fine sometimes — but in rehab, persistent pain, post-op recovery, or performance training, “guessing” can slow progress or flare symptoms.
Velocity-based training helps us:
- Set the right intensity for your current capacity (not your best day ever)
- Progress safely without underdoing it or overdoing it
- Track improvement objectively (even when symptoms fluctuate)
- Reduce wasted sessions where the load is too light to help, or too heavy to recover from It’s not about chasing numbers for the sake of it — it’s about making training more precise.
Who is Velocity-Based Training for?
- are returning to training after injury and want a structured ramp-up
- want to build strength but struggle with flare-ups when you push too hard
- are post-op and need a measured, staged return to loading
- are an athlete who wants to improve power, speed, and repeatability
- like the idea of clear targets and visible progress, rather than “see how it goes”
- build capacity confidently, and keep you moving forward.
What happens in a Velocity-Based Training session?
Your session is tailored — not “one setting for everyone”.
Typically, we will:
- Assess what you’re working towards (pain, rehab milestones, sport demands, strength goals)
- Choose the right movements for your body and stage (not just generic lifts)
- Use velocity feedback to set the right load and effort on the day
- Monitor fatigue and quality so you get the training effect without digging a hole
- Build a progression plan so improvements carry over into your rehab, sport, or day-to-day life
- Some people use this as part of their wider rehab plan; others integrate it into performance training alongside their usual gym work.
Evidence-led care (Not hype)
You’ll see big claims online about “optimising” training. Our approach is simple:
- velocity-based training is a useful tool, not a magic fix
- the results come from the right programme, done consistently
- we use the data to support decision-making — and we still prioritise good coaching, good movement, and sensible progression
- If velocity-based training isn’t the right fit for you, we’ll tell you honestly — and we’ll recommend a better approach.
