Movement School
Movement School at East Devon Physical Therapy is a supportive, structured programme to help you move with more confidence, improve strength and balance, and stay independent for longer. Based in Axminster, East Devon, it’s especially well-suited to older adults and anyone managing arthritis, recovering after a stroke, living with long-term stiffness or weakness, or feeling unsteady and worried about falls. We regularly help people from across Devon, Dorset and Somerset, including Seaton, Sidmouth, Honiton, Exeter, Lyme Regis, Bridport and Chard.
Built for real life (not just “fitness”)
For many people, the goal isn’t running faster—it’s walking further without pain, getting up from a chair more easily, feeling safer on stairs, improving confidence outdoors, or reducing the fear of falling. Movement School focuses on the movements that matter most day-to-day: standing, stepping, turning, reaching, balance, and controlled strength.
Start with a proper movement assessment
Your journey begins with an initial assessment in our Axminster clinic. We look at how you move, where you feel restricted, and what’s limiting your confidence or function. That might include:
- Balance and stability checks
- Strength and control (hips, knees, ankles, core, shoulders)
- Walking and functional movement patterns (sit-to-stand, step-ups, turning, single-leg control)
- Joint mobility and stiffness patterns (common with arthritis)
- Movement quality after neurological events like stroke (where appropriate)
A progressive programme for arthritis, stroke recovery and falls prevention
From your assessment, we build a plan that’s safe, progressive and measurable. Sessions are coached and adapted to your ability, with a focus on:
- Building strength safely around painful or stiff joints
- Improving balance reactions and confidence on your feet
- Better coordination and control (particularly helpful post-stroke)
- Practical “everyday” conditioning so you can do more with less effort
- Gradual progression—no intimidation, no being thrown into a class you can’t keep up with
Technology-supported rehab when it helps
Our Axminster facility includes advanced equipment that can support safer strength training and objective progress tracking—useful for older adults, arthritis management, and neurological rehabilitation where consistency and measurable improvement really matter.
If you’re looking for falls prevention support in East Devon, help with arthritis-friendly strength and mobility, or a structured way to rebuild confidence after a stroke, Movement School is a great place to start.
