Stroke Rehabilitation

Specialist stroke rehabilitation to rebuild movement, confidence and independence

Stroke Rehabilitation

At East Devon Physical Therapy, we provide specialist stroke rehabilitation designed to help people improve mobility, rebuild strength, and regain confidence after stroke.

Recovery after stroke can feel overwhelming. Walking may feel less stable, balance may be affected, strength may be reduced, and day-to-day tasks can suddenly become much harder. Our role is to provide expert guidance, structured rehabilitation, and the right support to help you make meaningful progress.

We work with people at different stages of stroke recovery, whether you are newly discharged, further along in your rehabilitation, or looking for ongoing support to improve walking, balance and function.

Every stroke is different, and recovery looks different for every person.

Common challenges after stroke can include:

A detailed assessment helps us understand where the main problems are, what is limiting progress, and how to build the right rehabilitation plan for you.

Stroke rehabilitation is not about generic exercises.
It is about identifying what matters most to you and building a programme that improves real-life movement, function and independence.

We focus on practical goals such as walking more confidently, improving balance, getting stronger, managing fatigue, and making everyday activities easier.

Your treatment plan may include:

Our aim is to help you move better, feel safer, and build confidence step by step.

At East Devon Physical Therapy, we combine hands-on clinical expertise with advanced rehabilitation technology to support stroke recovery.

One of the most valuable tools for many stroke patients is the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill. By reducing bodyweight and creating a safer, more supported walking environment, the AlterG can help people practise walking with greater confidence and less fear of falling. It allows earlier, more comfortable gait training and gives patients the chance to build rhythm, endurance and trust in their movement.

Depending on your needs, rehabilitation may also be supported by other specialist equipment to improve strength, control, mobility and confidence in a structured way.

For many people after stroke, one of the biggest barriers is not just physical ability, but confidence.

If walking feels unsafe, progress can slow quickly. That is why the right rehabilitation environment matters. We create a supportive, encouraging setting where you can practise movement safely, work at the right level, and build confidence over time.

This is especially important for people who feel stuck after initial recovery or who want to continue improving beyond standard discharge pathways.

People often come to us because they want to:

Your first appointment gives us time to understand your stroke history, current ability, and the goals that matter most to you.

We will assess your mobility, walking, balance and function, explain what we feel is limiting progress, and build a realistic rehabilitation plan around your needs.

You will leave with a clear plan that is supportive, practical and tailored to your stage of recovery.
