Tendinopathy Rehabilitation
At East Devon Physical Therapy, we help people with tendon pain reduce discomfort, restore movement and rebuild strength so they can return to walking, training, work and sport with confidence.
Tendon pain can be frustrating, persistent and often slower to settle than people expect. It may come on gradually over time or flare when training load, activity levels or day-to-day demands increase. In many cases, the issue is not just inflammation or irritation, but how well the tendon is coping with load.
We regularly help people with Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, gluteal tendinopathy and rotator cuff-related tendon pain.
Our role is to assess properly, explain clearly and build a treatment plan that helps you make steady, meaningful progress.
Common tendon problems we treat
- Achilles tendinopathy: Achilles tendon pain often causes stiffness and discomfort at the back of the heel or lower calf, especially first thing in the morning, after rest or during running and walking.
- Patellar tendinopathy: Patellar tendon pain often develops with jumping, sprinting, gym work or repeated loading and can become stubborn if not managed well.
- Gluteal tendinopathy: Gluteal tendon pain often causes discomfort on the outside of the hip, especially when walking, climbing stairs, lying on that side or standing for longer periods.
- Rotator cuff-related tendon pain: Rotator cuff tendon pain can affect lifting, reaching, sleep, gym work and overhead activity. Symptoms often build with repeated use or increased loading.
Common symptoms of tendinopathy
People with tendon pain may experience:
- Pain that builds with activity or repeated loading
- Stiffness after rest or first thing in the morning
- Pain during running, jumping, lifting or overhead movement
- Reduced strength or confidence in the affected area
- Symptoms that settle with rest but return when activity increases again
- Flare-ups after doing too much too soon
Not all tendon pain is the same, which is why a detailed assessment is important.
Our approach to tendinopathy treatment
At East Devon Physical Therapy, we do not just focus on pain relief.
We look at how the tendon is responding to load, what is aggravating symptoms, how strength and control are being affected, and what needs to change to support recovery.
Your treatment plan may include:
- A detailed assessment of the tendon problem
- Clear diagnosis and explanation
- Advice on activity modification and load management
- Targeted exercises to improve strength and tolerance to load
- Progressive rehabilitation for walking, running, work and sport
- Mobility work where appropriate
- Manual therapy where appropriate
- Advice on pacing and flare-up management
- PBM laser therapy where clinically appropriate to help calm irritation and support recovery
Our aim is to reduce pain, improve function and help you return to activity with more confidence.
Why tendon pain can linger
Tendon pain often becomes persistent when the tendon is either overloaded too quickly or underprepared for the demands being placed on it.
Rest alone may settle symptoms temporarily, but if the tendon is not gradually reloaded in the right way, symptoms often return when normal activity increases again.
That is why effective treatment is not just about settling pain. It is about improving the tendon’s capacity, rebuilding strength and helping you tolerate load more confidently over time.
Why choose East Devon Physical Therapy?
We combine expert clinical assessment with practical, evidence-based rehabilitation tailored to the individual.
Some people need help settling a recent flare-up. Others need a more structured rehabilitation plan to return to running, gym training, work or sport after repeated setbacks. We adapt treatment to the person in front of us rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our team focuses on honest advice, clear explanation and meaningful long-term improvement.

People often come to us because they want to:
